Hi, I am jonlaya

Let's get to know each other

The name of my studio, LUEM, is a blend of my daughters’ names—Lucy and Emry. Pretty special, right? It’s a constant reminder of the heart behind everything I do.

I was born in California, but Virginia has been home for most of my life. When I’m not behind the camera, you’ll usually find me outside in the garden, tending to my chickens, or baking a fresh loaf of sandwich bread. I have a soft spot for all things vintage—whether it's a well-worn quilt or a perfectly broken-in pair of boots.

Home is my happy place. I find joy in the quiet, ordinary moments—humming in the kitchen, chasing light through the windows, or simply watching my kids play in the yard. It’s that deep love for the little things that inspires how I photograph weddings: honestly, intentionally, and with heart.

My Wedding Story

On a freezing morning in 2011...

My husband and I eloped. Our plan was to keep it just between us and share the news with family afterward—but things didn’t go exactly as planned.

When I asked my sister to do my makeup (a rare request from me), she instantly knew something was up. She insisted on being there, and to this day, I’m so grateful she did—because she brought a camera.

The only reason I have any photos from our wedding day is because she took them. Just five images, but they mean everything to me. Every anniversary, I pull them out, reliving the emotions of that day.

That experience is why I’m so passionate about wedding photography. I know firsthand how priceless these moments become—not just for you, but for the generations that come after you. My daughters weren’t there to see us get married, but they get to experience that day through the photos we display in our home. And one day, they’ll be able to share them with their own children.

Your wedding photos aren’t just pictures—they’re a legacy. They’re the tangible memories that allow you to relive your love story, year after year. And I’d be honored to capture that for you.
